These crosses represent the more than 5,000 New Zealand lives lost in Belgium; this being double the number of New Zealanders killed at Gallipoly. This brought the total number of cassualties to 18,000. The crosses are standing on the origianl parade ground where some of these soldiers once trained. The ground has been blessed by the local Ngati Whatua iwi to show respect for the fallen new Zealanders. You are welcome to place flowers and other tributes amongst the crosses. Please treat the Crosses and Field of Remembrance with the dignity The Passchendaele exhibition is a silent reminder from the Belgian people that they have not forgotten New Zealand's major contribution to their freedom and the considerable sadrivide of what was then a very small nation.
